Hoof trimming video - Lucero - featuring type 2.5 (LF) and 3.5 (LH) horses' hooves

Watch Beccy Smith trim from her perspective during this practice with a GoPro head cam!

This free video features a left fore and left hind hoof full trim of an adult Iberian gelding called Lucero. These are low scoring type 2.5 (LF) and type 3.5 (LH) hooves common in the UK and other countries with similar climate. This means this horse has a chronic ”back of the hoof" internal arch problem plus he is showing signs indicative of sub-clinical laminitis (type 5).

This hoof type system is taught by Daisy Bicking at the International School of Integrative Hoofcare and helps to better identify and assess horses and their hooves, in order to provide the best possible hoof care intervention, for a pro-active approach to holistic, integrative, welfare focused hoof care.

Lucero is trimmed by his owner who is a long term mentorship client. Here I am performing a check up and and readdress after 3 months since my last visit. Lucero, like many Spanish/Iberian horses, he is very sensitive and this can translate to weak SADP (suspensory apparatus of the distal phalanx) and connective tissue. He can be very reactive metabolically to dietary and environmental changes and appears to have a degree of laxity in his tendons, ligaments and fascia.

Lucero benefits from and appreciates trimming in a neutral limb and global posture. As you can see, I aim to be as sensitive and compassionate to his needs as possible and you will notice I position his limb and trim him accordingly in response to his 'requests'.

"Compassionate Equestrianism = empathy in action".
