Willow is a 6 year old warmblood featured in this case study: https://www.holisticequine.co.uk/post/case-study-with-radiographs-willow-a-6-year-old-warmblood-with-npla-and-compensatory-posture Willow is currently in rehab after her owner discovered Willow's hoof balance was negatively impacting her posture, development and overall balance and comfort. Willow has type 2 (fronts) and type 3 (hind) hooves, common in the UK and other countries with a similar climate. This means this horse has a chronic ”back of the hoof" internal arch problem, giving rise to hoof distortions and thin soles typically. This is also associated with compensatory posture and development, and can lead to secondary orthopaedic issues over time if not appropriately addressed.
This hoof type system is taught by Daisy Bicking at the International School of Integrative Hoofcare and helps to better identify and assess horses and their hooves, in order to provide the best possible hoof care intervention, for a pro-active approach to holistic, integrative, welfare focused hoof care.
This was my second visit, and unfortunately, Willow had an accident shortly after my first visit, leading to injuries and box rest. Walks out in hand and a brief turnout time twice daily on a small abrasive surface outside the stable has over-worn the capsule.
In the video, you will learn how I carefully address the distortion while maintaining optimum comfort, and trim in neutral posture to facilitate the release of fascial tension while trimming. Naturally, Willow appreciates being handled with compassion and care, requiring trimming in 'neutral' as much as possible.
If, like Willow's owner, you wish to learn compassionate and integrative hoof care or would like an objective assessment of your horse's welfare parameters, including hoof and posture markups backed by evidence and research, please explore our services and educational events.
