In this episode of The EquiScience Podcast, I joined host Elisa Walfish to discuss hoof health and biomechanics, and why we need to consider the hoof as part of the whole horse rather than in isolation.

We explore the relationship between equine hoof care, posture and movement, including how changes in hoof balance and morphology can influence the way a horse stands, loads its limbs and moves.

We also discuss different approaches to hoof trimming, and why I believe the horse’s response to our intervention matters more than trying to make every hoof conform to a particular shape or ideal.

Good hoof care should provide evidence that what we are doing is improving the horse’s welfare. That means observing changes in posture, movement, comfort, tissue development, behaviour and overall function over time.

The conversation also explores diet, metabolism and some of the wider factors that can influence hoof health. For me, this is where hoof health and biomechanics become particularly interesting. The feet, body, movement and physiology are interconnected, and our approach to hoof care should reflect that.
