Hind limb lameness is extremely common in domestic horses, both ridden and non ridden, despite scientific evidence linking lameness in hind limb suspensories, hocks and stifles especially; to hoof balance.
This would suggest that the recognition and maintenance of ideal hind hoof balance might prevent pathology and lameness in these regions. However, in my experience as a professional integrative equine podiatrist; working therapeutically on both the hoof and body of the horse, hind limb hoof imbalances are present in nearly every horse I meet. Therefore, being able to document, and objectively assess hind hoof and posture to help identify horses at risk, and highlight the problem, solution and track changes over time is critical to equine welfare.
