RESCUE REMEDY
What can it do for you?

Rescue Remedy is often the first introduction people have to the suite of Bach Flower Remedies. However, few people are fully aware of the true function of Rescue Remedy and the purpose for which it was originally developed. Consequently, people are all too often taking Rescue Remedy to assist with their particular situation, only to be disappointed with the results. Contrary to its actual purpose, Rescue Remedy has been misinterpreted as the panacea for all ills, and as such is regularly used by those suffering from a variety of emotional problems.

It is important to be conscious of how Rescue Remedy differs from the 38 single remedies. It is the only one of the Bach Remedies to be sold as a pre mixed treatment and is also avaible from other companies under a variety of names such as Five flower remedy.

Dr Bach developed this combination of 5 of the Bach Flower Remedies to cope with the emotional effects of accidents or emergencies, shocks and trauma. It is also excellent for situations of panic, severe stress and tension.

So what's in it?

Rock Rose:
For terror and panic

Sometimes referred to as the 39th remedy, Rescue Remedy can be thought of as a single remedy with its own indications. By looking at the composite remedies and the mental states they address, we can see why, in some situations, a person will not feel the benefit of taking Rescue Remedy.

Each of the 38 remedies address it's own set of negative emotions. If a person's feelings are not covered in these five remedies, then taking Rescue Remedy will not have the desired effect.

In prescribing a Bach Flower treatment, the remedy needs to suit the individual problems. Rescue Remedy is not relevant for all problems. If the feelings are of anger and jealousy, resulting in the person experiencing mood swings, then a different selection of remedies would be required - in this case Holly and Scleranthus.

Clematis:
For faintness, unconsciousness and feelings of a "floating" mind
Impatiens:
For irritability, tension and pain
Star of Bethlehem:
For the effects of shock and panic
Cherry Plum:
For fear of losing control or panic

When should I use Rescue Remedy for myself and my horse?
Rescue Remedy is not designed for long term use (although it is perfectly safe to do so), but for situations that may result in, or follow, shock or trauma. The combination of the remedies is one which is very calming, dealing effectively with panic, upset, shock, fear, nerves and anxiety. However, once the immediate situation has been dealt with, it is better to assess the horse's (human's, dog's, cat's, Child's...) emotional state and select remedies specifically for the individual.

Rescue Remedy is useful for:

  • Accidents & shock
  • Onset of sudden illness i.e. colic / allergic reaction
  • Before and during any stressful event such as competition / travelling / vets visit / Foaling
  • Any time where you or you horse is dazed or disorientated
  • Situations where calm is needed (as a result of fear or panic)
  • Rescue animals in the early stages until assessment can be made and more specific remedies mixed
  • Arguments
  • Interviews
  • Dr's visits
  • Panic attacks
  • Childbirth

  • It does not replace medical treatment and so if you are worried about your horses well being you should always consult a vet - however Rescue Remedy can and will make a difference in situations as described above, helping the horse or you to recovery, keeping you calm and reducing the effects of shock - definitely one remedy to keep close to hand.

    Dosage:
The dosage for horses, humans, children and small pets is the same and is regardless of weight or size. For normal use I recommend 4 drops 4 times a day. This can be impractical with our horses and consequently I have found that 10 drops twice a day works equally well.

The drops can be put in feeds or treats, or dropped directly into the bottom lip (please exercise extreme caution with this as the pipette supplied in the bottle is made of glass). Many of my clients have found that the drops soak well into herbal treats.

    Rescue Cream:
Also available in the Rescue range is Rescue Cream. This is a gentle lanolin free, non greasy cream. It contains the five remedies as detailed above with the addition of Crab apple remedy. This remedy is known as the system cleanser of the 38 remedies and is often used for skin problems such as rashes and bruises. Applying the cream will help the physical manifestation of emotional crisis. The remedies can be absorbed into the body when applied externally. Do not use Rescue Cream on open wounds without consulting a vet.
